Kim Beggs

“Kim Beggs observes the world with acute vision, clearly placing her convictions on the side of humanity.”  -Fervor Coulee Roots Music Opinion

“Whatever ‘It’ is, Kim Beggs has It … Her songs and singing are so strong and emotional, and her songs stand up with just her voice and guitar,”  -Howard Bilerman, BYS album producer

Kim Beggs’s voice lures you in with its emotive melancholy before you’ve had time to absorb the fact that she’s a formidable songwriter.” - NNNN - NOW Magazine

"Like Mary Chapin Carpenter’s Come On Come On and even more fittingly Lucinda Williams’ self-titled third album, there isn’t a single wrong turn taken on this marvelous album. " - Fervor Coulee

Celebrating 20 years as a recording artist in 2024, Kim Beggs offers her seventh solo release, Beneath Your Skin, wielding her voice through the rough edge of sweetness to explore themes of family history, survival and wild habitats. Songs of light and shadows are her signature: Kim Beggs embraces the darkness of our world, ensures hope illuminates each song and revels in the maturity and sure-sightedness of a constantly evolving artist.

Kim Beggs’ honest, distinct and ethereal vocal approach—whispered remembrances, intimacies and strong empathy—is the conduit between introspective, poetic compositions and deliberately sparse arrangements, bringing to mind the varied approaches of Neil Young and Nick Drake. These qualities make Beneath Your Skin immediately engaging for both the initiated and new listeners.

Invoking her ability to weave informed observations into compelling songs replete with imagery and figurative allusions, Kim Beggs brings her perspectives to heartfelt vignettes with a liberating freedom of self-expression which marries language to melody as few folk singers do, exploring traditional structures while establishing and amplifying her approach to modern, folk-based Americana. Kim Beggs embodies the personas of her characters - a trucker, Mother Earth, or a lover and strips the artifice, exposes life’s harsh backbone and, just before things get too bleak, she’ll “fill your little tin cup with some stuff”.

The instrumental base of the album is largely a reflection of three women: Kim Beggs (acoustic guitar, stomp board) with world-class musicians Lilah Larson (electric guitar, bass, drums) and Charlotte Cornfield (electric guitar and bass, drums, and keys).  Along with Mike O’Brien (electric guitar) they gathered to create atmospheric pathways that support Beggs’ lyrical journey.

Kim includes two co-writes: Austin, Texas’ Shawnee Kilgore on House for Slaughter and Texas songwriter, Shad Blair alongside Dieter Weise on You Been Down My Road.

A musician, singer, and songwriter of formidable character, Kim Beggs has released seven well-received albums while also collaborating with Natalie Edelson for two albums as The Blue Warblers. Nominated for thirteen music awards Kim continues with Beneath Your Skin to explore her world, the people, emotions, and events that inspire her.

Born in Quebec and raised mostly in Ontario, Kim Beggs found herself in the Yukon more than thirty years ago, immediately embraced her new home and set out on a musical journey which would bring her to record with some of the most intriguing names in Canadian roots music production: Bob Hamilton, Steve Dawson, David Travers-Smith, and the late David Gavin Baxter. For this album, she traveled to Montreal to record with Howard Bilerman (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Leonard Cohen, The Weather Station) at Hotel2Tango studios.
